Marconi Beach Clean

Over fifty members braved the damp weather to conduct a beach clean on Sunday 1st March. After bacon rolls and a safety briefing, the group headed out in three teams to litter pick the entire beach from Stansgate to Stone. It was great to see such enthusiasm, including from many of our younger members.

The beaches were found to be in fairly good condition which was good to see. Nevertheless, enough litter was recovered to fill a small skip. This was duly brought back to the club and disposed of. A record of all the items recovered was also made. The most bizarre item was a plastic toilet seat found hanging in some bushes. Its accompanying lid was found on the beach nearby. The most numerous finds were drinks cans and bottles and lots of fragments of plastic from larger items that had broken up.

The beach clean was conducted as part of the Million Mile Beach Clean initiative run by the organisation Surfers Against Sewage. They provided equipment and guidance to run the beach clean. A record of the items recovered has been uploaded to their website to support their wider campaigns for cleaner waterways and beaches.
